The circumstances of Shugo Yumeno's birth are somewhat incredibly unusual. His mother, Charlotta Yumeno, is happily married to a Japanese woman named Yui Tamura... Yes, they're lesbians. Both Yui and Charlotta are also witches and had saved the world once as teenagers, which was how they met and fell in love. Five years after being married, the couple decided that they were financially stable enough to pursue their dream of raising a child together. Their friends were very excited for them and helped them research their options for adopting or conceiving a child. This eventually led them to meet the Aurellen family.

The Aurellen family is a prideful magical family of "Golden Mages." The term dates back a hundred years, to when the "magic price system" first came into play. In order to receive protection from the magical government, the MASQ, a person had to willingly accept this curse. Those that did not take the curse were unprotected and most of them ended up slaughtered by witch hunters. "Golden Mage" is the term used to refer to a magic user who has no curse on their genes: They are unaffected by the magic price system and can access their full magical potential without penalty.

Charlotta, as it turned out, was also a golden mage. It was therefore in the Aurellen family's best interest to have her assist in the next generation of golden mages. Long story short, they agreed to help both Charlotta and Yui have children (it was Yui's parents who really wanted a biological grandchild.)

So in the end, Shugo is a super special golden mage. Unlike other Game of Fate mages, Shugo has no curse on his magical DNA that prices his magic. Charlotta and Yui both wanted their children to grow up realizing magic was a special privilege, so made the conscious decision to keep it a secret from Shugo and Usao.

Growing up was not easy for the siblings. Early in their childhood they were bullied and harassed by Rosie Harland, a neighbor of theirs, for having two mothers instead of a heteronormative family. Rosie played ringleader for the neighborhood kids and made sure the "weird kids" weren't invited to play with the others. The bullying was most harsh towards Usao, as the other kids decided she would be a "girl lover" like her mothers and was "gross" to be around.
This resulted in Shugo and Usao isolating themselves from the other kids; they were half-siblings and around the same age, so they grew up together as both siblings and best friends. Usao didn't need anyone else to play with and Shugo felt responsible for looking after her.

Shugo did want to make friends. He frequently tried to reach out to other kids at school, kids who didn't care that he had two moms. It was Usao who had absolutely no interest in other kids. She began faking stupidity and acting like she was sick and needy; she would fake coughing fits, for example, or pretend she needed Shugo's help with schoolwork. All in an elaborate attempt to keep him focused on her.
